Learn to fuse your very own dichroic glass cabochons for use in jewelry. You will make about 20-30 pieces in the six-week class. We will cover types of glass, basics of glass cutting, and assembly and kiln firing using dichroic and non-dichroic fusible glass. You will learn what dichroic glass is, how to tell how it should behave, and achieving different effects. Additional material fee of $50.
Classes are offered for both beginners and advanced students. Participants will progress from the basics to advanced techniques of wire wrapping. Each week, you will be challenged with a new set of parameters. Topics to be covered include: tools, all about wire, what is the difference between a stone and a cabochon, measuring, creating a design, where to shop for supplies, helpful hints, and the ever popular "what to do when things go wrong." Supply list available at registration. Basic wire wrap kit available for purchase ($16) at first class.
Cold connections are used to connect materials that cannot tolerate heat (paper, plastic, heat-sensitive stones, change color) or that will not join well by soldering (aluminum to copper, highly textured metals, found objects). Examples include jump rings, rivets, hinges, tabs/slots, solderless stone settings and many others. They can be simply functional or become design elements in themselves. That’s up to you.
The Basics will cover safety, tool and material usage, kiln firing procedures, metal preparation, enamel application methods (sifting, wetpacking), discussion with examples of different design techniques (sgraffito, stencils, inclusions, textured surfaces, champleve, cloisonne, plique a jour, painting, etc.). Basic projects will include sgraffito, stencils, inclusions, textured surfaces. Instructor will have die-cut copper forms available. Beyond the Basics will depend on skill level and interest of individual students. Students may choose from advanced techniques such as: champleve or plique a jour, cloisonne on copper or silver, beads, foil, enamel on PMC, etc. $25 material fee will include all enamels and consumable supplies and inclusions, cloisonne wires and tool usage as well as 5 copper pieces to enamel. Additional copper and silver will be available for purchase.
The Beginning Beading and Design course is an opportunity for interested students to enjoy the art of beading. The class will allow students to advance one step at a time each week as they build a firm foundation for jewelry making. The only requirement is a little patience and a good sense of humor! The instructor will provide supplies for each class with a wide assortment of beads and findings to choose from in a broad price range, from very inexpensive to moderately expensive. As students advance each week, there will be beads left over from the previous week’s course that may be utilized. (Students may bring their own beads, but it is preferred that they wait until after the first class so supplies are somewhat standard.) Instructions will be in lecture form with hands-on demonstrations. Written instructions will be provided for each class. A supply list will be provided the week before, with the exception of the first week.
Note: This class has a materials fee paid to the instructor.
